Royal Mail’s General Counsel to join Easyjet

Royal Mail’s General Counsel Maaike de Bie is to join Easyjet, taking the top legal spot in the company come mid-2019.

Maaike will replace Daud Khan (partner at Clifford Chance) as General Counsel. She has been a revolutionary counsel for the five years spent working for Royal Mail and is well known for her innovative approach.

During her time at Royal Mail, she restructured the department by having more of the legal work done in-house. The company as a result brought in more junior lawyers to handle the work. She also set up an internal training academy, focused on developing junior lawyers’ soft skills such as networking and leadership in addition to traditional legal training.

She also revolutionised the company’s use of tech. Under her command, the company launched the ‘Crisis Response App’ which aimed at helping the business react better to investigations by regulators. Royal Mail also brought in an automated contract system to help with efficiency, accuracy and the availability of legal advice.

Maaike obtained her legal degrees in Amsterdam and in Canada and is a qualified lawyer in both New York and the UK. She began her legal career at White & Case in New York before moving in-house and working for companies such as EBRD, GE and EY.
